Exhibition Delacroix and Eugène The Man Behind the Artist

From February 7 to May 6, 2019 in the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix, Paris.

For the first time, ten students from the École du Louvre have been invited to conceive an exhibition at the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix. This project was an opportunity to examine little-known facets of the artist and provide a fresh perspective on the collection.

Who then is the Eugène hiding behind Delacroix? Beyond the myth embodied by Delacroix, through his best-known representations and his public persona, visitors are invited to delve into the private side of Eugène, discovering him through his passions and his places of refuge. Central to the exhibition is his Journal, providing insight into all of the ambivalence and complexity of his personality, as well as the richness and diversity of his art.

We invite you on a recreational journey through his last apartment and studio, in which citations from the Journal and anecdotes will serve as your guides to explore the artist’s private sphere. You will also discover other facets of this “sociable misanthrope” who sought “to shut himself further into solitude.”

Organized by:

The students of the École du Louvre: Jade Barbet, Marion Benard, Eugenia Dell’Aiuto, Anne Decolonges, Louise Madinier, Isaline Mscica, Marie-Liesse Postic, Rachele Riani, Alithéia Soulié, Clémence Vergez, under the supervision of Dominique de Font-Réaulx, Director of the Interpretation and Cultural Programming Department, Musée du Louvre, with coordination by Jessy Coisnon and Milena Planche, Musée National Eugène-Delacroix.
